Get Dark Money out of Politics!
Are you tired of watching billionaires and corporate lobbyists get their way in Washington—while the voices of ordinary Americans are drowned out by money?
Since the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United v. FEC ruling in 2010, our democracy has been auctioned off to the highest bidder. That decision, as well as other precedents which have made it impossible to regulate campaign spending, opened the floodgates for corporations and the ultra-wealthy—people like Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and the titans of Big Food, Big Ag, Big Chemical, and Big Pharm—to spend billions in dark money to buy influence, and pass laws and regulations that benefit them, while oppressing the rest of us.
As Tiffany Muller, President of End Citizens United Action Fund, put it:
“Citizens United has turned our democracy into a government that serves the ultra-wealthy. Political spending by billionaires has surged an astonishing 160-fold since 2010, and working families are paying the price like never before.”
This isn’t a partisan problem—it’s a systemic one. Both major parties have allowed corporate cash to corrupt our political system. But together, we can change that.
The Citizens Over Corporations Amendment would overturn Citizens United and help restore power to we the people—not the billionaire class, not big corporations, but everyday Americans. It would:
- Ensure the ability of Congress or the States to propose reasonable viewpoint-neutral limitations on the raising and spending of money by candidates and others to influence elections
- Distinguish between natural persons and corporations or other artificial entities created by law, including by allowing Congress or the State to prohibit such entities from spending money to influence elections
- Allow — but not require — public financing of campaigns when states choose to enact such laws
- Take further steps to protect the freedom of the press
